Dealing With Workplace Stress

There is no question that workplace stress is one of the most common sources of stress for most adults. Considering the fact that most of us spend the majority of our time at work and have many responsibilities, deadlines and relationships we have to deal with at work it’s no wonder we feel stressed! But what can we do to manage our workplace stress?

Stress management is important for coping with the excessive demands at work. The source of workplace stress is usually an incompatibility between the demands of the job and the qualifications or personality of the worker. This doesn’t always mean that the person is unqualified, but often the work environment or philosophy is not compatible with the worker.

One way of managing stress on the job is to find a different job. That’s not really managing, though, it is more like avoiding. Instead, especially if you like your job, it is a good idea to find means of stress management on the job. It is in the best interest of any company to help their employees in this respect in order to create a healthier and happier work environment.

Studies were conducted in 22 hospitals where stress prevention programs were implemented and it was found that malpractice claims were reduced by a whopping 70%! This was compared with 22 different hospitals that had not implemented such a policy. In that group there was no change at all in the number of suits filed!

Workplace Stress

So what exactly did they do in this stress prevention program? I consisted of three parts. First of all there was education for employees and management alike about workplace stress. Next, important changes were made in policies and procedures that improved the organization, therefore removing or reducing organizational sources of stress. Lastly a resource for employee assistance was developed.

Not every company will implement this type of workplace stress management program, but there are also things you can do to help relieve your own stress in the workplace. The first is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Don’t eat junk food because you are stressed. Eating healthy foods will give you energy and make you feel better in general. Getting enough rest and regular exercise will also improve your mood and energy levels.

Learn about time management and be sure to prioritize your responsibilities. If you feel your workload is too heavy consider talking with your boss about it. Organize your work so it can be done most efficiently.

Lastly, take time out to relax. Don’t work through your breaks in hopes of catching up. You are likely to wear yourself out and make things worse. Use some relaxation techniques and engage in a relaxing hobby when you are not at work. Your job already takes most of your day; don’t allow it to take your health and happiness, too!
